CASTEL TIROLO

Residence of the Counts of Tyrol, this castle bequeathed its name to the entire region. The tour retraces the construction of this imposing, massive edifice in the 11th^century , on a site that revealed prehistoric remains, as well as the remains of three successive churches between the 6th^and 10th^centuries . Romanesque portals and Gothic frescoes in the chapel. The castle museum also depicts life in the Middle Ages through a series of period objects. The museum covers a thousand years of Tyrolean history, with a section on the 20th^century and the annexation of South Tyrol to Italy.
