The capital of Tyrol, Innsbruck is an economic and cultural center. With 131,000 inhabitants, it is Austria's5th largest city, behind Vienna, Graz, Linz and Salzburg. This regional metropolis is somewhat reminiscent of Grenoble. Indeed, as in the capital of Isère, mountains are at the end of every street in Innsbruck! The peaks that encircle the city exceed 2,500 m in altitude. Delightfully situated on the Inn, in the heart of the Alps, it's the gateway to the high Alps, their villages and massifs. Just a few kilometers from the town, a bucolic mountain world begins. So it's hardly surprising that the town is renowned for its sporting activities, with 500 km of ski slopes nearby, and that it has twice been an Olympic city, in 1964 and 1976, as well as hosting the 2018 World Road Cycling Championships. With its mountains within easy reach, Innsbruck also boasts magnificent Baroque and classical architecture. Its rich architectural heritage is complemented by a large number of museums. Innsbruck has the second largest number of museums in Austria, after Vienna. Innsbruck also stands out for its modern buildings, with bold architecture that combines metal and glass and blends in well with its heritage. A university town with more than 30,000 students, Innsbruck is a lively city, with numerous cafés and restaurants praising its quality of life, as well as being a major tourist center. Hiking, skiing, mountain biking, cycling, climbing - you've got the choice of outdoor activities in splendid surroundings.
