Matrei, a typical Tyrolean village, is the first town you come to as you descend from Felbertauern towards the south. It's also the third-largest municipality in Austria. Matrei is framed by the country's highest peaks: Grossglockner (3,798 m) and Grossvenediger (3,657 m). This location makes Matrei an ideal starting point for hikes. In winter, 3 chairlifts and 3 surface lifts serve 30 km of downhill ski runs. The frescoes in the St. Alban parish church, by Franz Anton Zeiller, are well worth a look. The frescoes on the facade of the presbytery depict the four cardinal virtues.
