Alpbach is the epinal image that one has of the Austrian village. Nestled around the bell tower of the St. Oswald church, its large wooden chalets, with red, white or pink geraniums spilling over the balconies, earned it the title of "most beautiful village in Austria" in 1983 and the award for "most beautiful village in Europe" ten years later. This charming mountain village with 2,600 inhabitants is a favorite with Austrian holidaymakers. In the summer, the beautiful landscape can be admired on foot, by mountain bike or by paragliding. In winter, powder lovers can choose between downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, dog sledding, snowshoeing, curling or ice skating. The resort is very family friendly and there are many activities and facilities for the little ones.Alpbach regularly hosts Austrian College seminars and important conferences, such as the European Forum in Alpbach, which brings together thinkers, politicians, scientists, economists and other international leaders. This is a great gathering that the scientist, philosopher and Nobel Prize winner in physics Erwin Schrödinger (1887-1961), who is buried in the small cemetery in Alpbach, would not have disliked. The Alpbachtal. 2 km south of Rattenberg, the village of Brixlegg is the gateway to the beautiful Alpbachtal. The valley runs from Brixlegg to Inneralpbach in the east and consists of nine villages: Kramsach, Alpbach, Brandenberg, Breitenbach, Brixlegg, Kundl, Münster, Rattenberg-Radfeld and Reith im Alpbachtal. Together with the neighboring Wildschönau valley, it is one of the ten largest ski areas in Tyrol, with good snow conditions in the season. The Grosser Galtenberg, at 2,424 m, overlooks several small, picturesque villages. Folklore is still very much alive, and there are several places where you can keep track of it, such as the Farmer's House Museum, the Alpbach Weikartgraben Mill, or the Tyrolean Mine and Hut Museum in Brixlegg. In the shadow of the Grosser Galtenberg, it is above all the Reither Kogel (1,337 m), Wiedersberger Horn (2,128 m) and Schatzberg (1,903 m) that many visitors come to climb in summer and winter.
