This village is one of the two ski resorts of the eponymous area. It is located at the foot of Monte Latemar, which owes its name to the 12th-century Ladin Lactemara. Characteristic of the Dolomites, this mountain range is made up of spectacular boulders sculpted by plate tectonics and stratification of the earth's crust in this area. It is also volcanic, with 200m deep fissures containing petrified lava rock, evidence of seismic activity. Access to Obereggen is complicated in winter (chains are compulsory) but this is what makes this wild place so charming for nature lovers
