Omagh, with an estimated population of just over 22,000, lies at the confluence of the rivers Drumragh and Camowen. Today, it is infamous for the terrible attack carried out by the IRA on August 15, 1998. A car bomb took the lives of 29 people and injured over 200 others. It was the bloodiest event of the entire period of political unrest in Northern Ireland. Now a bustling shopping town, County Tyrone's capital can be a good base for exploring the region's wealth of tourist attractions.
