In 1992, the European Union awarded Curracloe the title of "Most Beautiful Beach in Ireland". It is a white sand beach and a very safe swimming area. It was on this beach that Steven Spielberg shot the opening scenes of the movie Saving Private Ryan with Tom Hanks (instead of the Normandy landing beaches) in 1997. Many locals were extras To get there: take the direction of Curracloe (R742), a charming road bordered by embankments dotted with thatched cottages. Access to huge beaches, which run along the coast from Raven Point to Cahire Point, often beaten by the wind.
