Kells, where a monastery was founded by St. Columba (also known as St. Colmcille) in the 6th century, is most famous for the Book of Kells housed in Trinity College, Dublin. It is generally accepted that it was the monks of the monastery of Iona in Scotland, persecuted by the Vikings and finding refuge in Kells in 807, who brought an illuminated manuscript, later known as the Book of Kells. In the 12th century, when the monks made the monastery of Derry their headquarters, the monastery of Kells was abandoned. Little remains today except for a ten century old round tower, St Colmcille's House.
