To the south of Strangford Lough, Downpatrick is a very pleasant stopover after a visit to the Ards Peninsula. In the 12th century, Downpatrick was an important religious and academic center. Nearby is Inch Abbey. Beyond the town lies a region rich in historical and cultural memories. To the north-west, the town of Ballynahinch was the scene of a decisive battle during the 1798 revolt, in which 7,000 United Irishmen lost their lives. South of Ballynahinch, on the slopes of Cratlieve Mountain, stands the Legananny dolmen, one of Ireland's finest Neolithic tombs.
