This peaceful Victorian seaside resort at the foot of the Mourne Mountains is a delight for hiking enthusiasts. The most courageous can climb Slieve Donard, the highest mountain in the range at 852 m, in just one afternoon. That said, the superb hike to the foot of Slieve Donard is a real treat in itself! For families with children, there are other walks closer to the village. The area around Newcastle Bay (5 km of sand) is a pleasant place for walks. In summer, however, the town's main thoroughfare quickly becomes crowded with tourists.
