Once a tiny town populated by Vascons, its fate changed when, in 1090, King Sancho Ramírez decided to found a city there. The kings of Navarre, who were particularly fond of it, granted it many privileges and it became an important commercial centre. Its neighbourhoods multiplied, one of the most important of which was Juderia, which was destroyed in the 15th century by the Castilians, who expelled all the Jews from Spain. In the 19th century, during the Civil War, the Carlists made Estella their headquarters. Since then, every year in May, a procession climbs to the top of a nearby mountain to commemorate the dead.
