Araia is the centre of the communal area of Asparrena, which comprises a dozen hamlets. With 1 200 inhabitants, it is located at 600 metres above sea level, at the foot of Mount Alzania. Formerly crossed by a medieval path that connected the Col de San Adrián to the plain of Álava, the commune is now frequented by the hikers that go to Mount Alzania.
