Just outside Ayegui (a small town of around 2,000 inhabitants where you can stop to take a look at the church of San Martín, built in the 18th century), you come across one of the jewels of the pilgrimage: the Irache monastery, built under the shelter of the Montejurra and surrounded by vineyards. Over the centuries, this monumental complex, a veritable architectural mosaic (medieval, Renaissance and Baroque buildings can be seen), which has been uninhabited since 1985, has served many functions: as a pilgrim hospice, university, military hospital and religious college, making it one of the most notable monuments in Navarre.
