According to historians, the Campezo valley was already inhabited in 18 B.C., but in 823 the Moorish general Abd-Al-Karín had all its villages and crops destroyed. It was rebuilt during the reign of Alfonso VI "the Brave" in the 12th century. At that time, Santa Cruz was a fortified city disputed between the kingdoms of Navarre and Castile. It became part of the kingdom of Castile in the 14th century. Its castle, walls and gates were probably destroyed during the War of Independence between France and Spain at the beginning of the 19th century and again during the Carlist War.
