Its strategic position between Navarre and Castile made Salvatierra an important and prosperous city. Located in the heart of the plain, it has kept from its medieval past a historical center surrounded by a wall and with a configuration similar to that of Vitoria: three main streets cross it from north to south and two fortified churches (connected by secret passages), at the ends of the city, close the wall. The church of Santa Maria, in the north (15th-16th century) has a beautiful Gothic portal. To the south of the city, the church of San Juan, from the early 16th century, has a remarkable altarpiece
