San Millán (250 inhabitants) is enclosed between two monasteries, Yuso and Suso, which form a unique monumental complex classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monastic community founded by San Millán in the middle of the 6th century became an important place of pilgrimage: at the beginning of the 16th century, the community settled in the monastery of Yuso, an exceptional testimony to the survival of monastic life. San Millán de la Cogolla is also considered to be the cradle of the Castilian language, the first documents of which are preserved here: in the year 964 the first encyclopaedic dictionary of the Iberian Peninsula was written here!
