Nicknamed the "Pearl of Gran Canaria", it is the third largest city on the island after the capital Las Palmas and Telde. It is famous for its ceramics, but people come here mainly for its rum factory and its church of San Juan Bautista. Its historic centre was rebuilt in 1480, after the city was totally destroyed in 1478. Today, you will appreciate its historical buildings, gardens and typical streets. From the town, a narrow road leads to the top of the Montaña de Arucas, an ancient volcano that dominates the town. On a clear day, you can see the peninsula of La Isleta in Las Palmas and at nightfall, the view is splendid.
