Founded in the Middle Ages, Schirmeck appears in 1315 in a foundation act of the collegiate church of Haslach. The city has long lived thanks to the natural resources of its neighboring forests. Its name means "protected place" and from the beginning it occupied a strategic position on the Bruche, at a crossroads of very frequented roads linking Alsace to Lorraine. Today, it is a small, lively, commercial town that has succeeded in weaving a network of economic activities, particularly with its neighboring towns. The traumatic presence of a former Nazi extermination camp on its territory has earned the town the status of "City of Remembrance".
