For centuries, Grandfontaine and Framont referred to the same place. An abundant "fountain", a spring, is what gave Grandfontaine its name. Framont, on the other hand, comes from the name of the mountain overlooking the village: Ferratus mons, la montagne ferrifère, given in 1261. Today, this name has moved on to refer only to the site at the bottom of the valley where the main metallurgical infrastructure was developed: the Framont forges. There are many monuments to visit here, from the prehistoric sabbath stones to the ruins of the forges, still impressive in size today.
