The etymology of La Broque comes from the Gallic word "Brocco" whose topographical meaning would evoke a cleared spur, a place both sheltered from the floods of the river and next to water points. During the Second World War, a reformatory camp (for recalcitrant Alsatians) called "Schirmeck" was set up in La Broque. Only one building remains from this place of pain, but there are many historical testimonies. For two centuries, the town has been the most populated in the Upper Bruche Valley. It contributes and participates fully in the economic and cultural dynamism of the canton of which it is a part.
