Montromant, a rural commune, owes its name to the Romans - Mont-Romain or Mount of the Romans - because of the Roman aqueducts built under Emperor Claudius, including the Brevenne aqueduct which crosses the commune. During the Revolution, Montromant was one of the centres of Lyon's "Little Vendée", welcoming refractory priests, deserters, rebels and those who resisted government orders. Subsequently, the village was distinguished by its adherence to Bonapartism and then gradually rallied to the Republic.
