Montrond-les-Bains is a twofold water city, on the one hand because it sees the Loire flow, and on the other hand because of this spa, a hydromineral resource that sealed its destiny as a spa in 1885. However, Montrond has a life before thermalism. Around 1435, the name "Mont Rond" appeared for the first time, in reference to the mound of volcanic origin on which a first surveillance tower, ancestor of the feudal castle, was probably built at the end of the 11th century. The history of Montrond was therefore linked to that of the medieval castle that controlled the fording of the Loire River between Auvergne, Burgundy, Velay and other regions. Until the Revolution, the village of Meylieu-Montrond lived in the shade of this fortress, which was both dominant and protective. After its fire ordered in 1793 by the Commissioner of the Republic, the castle slowly fell into ruins. It was not until the late 1960s that the Association of Friends of the Old Castle began to safeguard it. Since then, every year, consolidation, security and restoration work has been carried out and this monument has become a living place of animation and culture. But the animation of the city is especially articulated today around the thermalism. In 1879, Francis Laur, civil engineer of the Mines, drilled a borehole near the national road in search of new coal deposits. The work is spread over several years. But by way of coal, we are discovering highly mineralized water bodies with a temperature of 28°C. On September 23, 1881, the borehole reached a depth of 475 m and the water gushed out at a height of 7 m. The Geyser thermal spring therefore offers mineral water with recognized benefits. The Montrond hydromineral station obtained the official particle "Les Bains" in 1938. The new spa experienced a period of prosperity until the inter-war period before declining. In 1986, the municipality decided to relaunch the thermal activity and began a new drilling at a depth of 540 m to increase the water flow and temperature (from 26 to 36 °C). A new modern spa was opened in 1989, specialising in the treatment of digestive disorders, also known for rheumatology. Since 2009, a thermal spa, Les Iléades, has been added, unique in the region for relaxation, well-being and fitness. All summer long, the castle's summer festivals, visits, entertainment on the theme of the Middle Ages, open-air cinema and a fireworks display take place. Many hotels and restaurants.
