Situated on the Continental Divide, the town takes its name from the word "diurne" (daytime), the sun's rays being the first to caress it. In fact, Duerne is perched higher than the other towns, at 800 m above sea level. Several megalithic sites are famous for the legends attached to them. The town also boasts a number of other curiosities: the Saint-Jean well on the road to Sainte-Foy-l'Argentière, which dates back to Napoleonic times, and some twenty crosses, including the Croix de la Forêt, erected between 1744 and 1747 at the time of a plague epidemic. One of the local events is the Randonnée des Chevreuils, held on the3rd Sunday in October.
