Known as the Pearl of the Valley, Le Malzieu has preserved a good part of its historical heritage and has put it to good use. Of the enclosure, there remain some sections of the ramparts, of which the inhabitants were so proud, which succeeded in keeping them safe from the misdeeds of the beast of Gévaudan. A square tower-porch and two cylindrical towers remain, one of which houses the tourist office and of which one can see the spiral staircase that led to the covered way. The enlightened amateur will find there some resemblance with the Templar cities of Larzac. But isn't this a stage on the way to Santiago de Compostela? In the center, behind the church, the clock tower is the old belfry of the medieval castle, which was used as a prison during the Wars of Religion. Not far from there, the Governor's house and its tower, date from the same period. On the other hand, the beautiful houses whose granite-framed doors are surmounted by triangular pediments, date from the 17th century and owe their construction to the zeal of an apothecary of the city: when the plague had wreaked enormous havoc, he recommended burning the houses of the plague victims in order to sanitize the place. The sanitary fire destroyed most of the city! When it was necessary to rebuild, these houses with beautiful facades were built. The visit is completed by a swim at the beach which was built on the Truyère or at the summer swimming pool. Once dry, take a walk to the menhirs of Pinjo Chabre (near Mazeirac) and Pouor Negro (near Julianges). Passing through Verdezun, you can go back in history by visiting the remains of an ancient Romanesque church from the 11th century. Better preserved, that of Prunières depended on the abbey of La Chaise-Dieu, it was built and fortified in the 12th century, decorated with frescoes and a superb bell tower-wall with three openings of saintongeois style (one of the oldest in France). It is at a short distance from the medieval site of Apcher where the castle of the lords of Apcher was located. Only a few remains have been preserved: the square tower and a 13th century Romanesque chapel; its lower room is used as an exhibition space for the results of excavations carried out in the area. The site of Apcher is also known for its Virgin. From there, a large panorama opens up on the Margeride. To the north, towards Le Puy, is Paulhac. A martyred village during the Second World War, rebuilt since then, it had also paid a heavy price to the Beast of Gévaudan which devoured five of its inhabitants.
