Santiago de Compostela and the Way of Saint James

He was one of the twelve apostles: his tomb is said to have been discovered in Galicia in the 9th century by a hermit guided by a star. The worship of relics was important at that time, and the site soon became a major pilgrimage site, just like Rome or Jerusalem. Santiago de Compostela in Galicia became an important city at the end of the 11th century. The largest Romanesque cathedral was built there. Ten centuries of pilgrims have traced the route of Saint-Jacques and thousands continue to do so every year. More than 10,000 pass through Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to sign the famous pilgrim's passport: the credencial, 62 % of whom are men. Walking (18% prefer cycling) shows a desire for renewal, reflection and conversion. It leaves time for encounter and discovery.
