Puy-l'Evêque has been perched above the River Lot since the Middle Ages. It was then an important city. Until the 19th century, barges bound for Bordeaux docked here. Today, tourism and vineyards are the two pillars of Puy-l'Évêque's dynamism. The AOC Cahors wine produced here contributes to Puy-l'Evêque's reputation. Pleasure boating has taken over from the river trade, and the river has been a major tourist attraction for the town since the second half of the 20th century. Last but not least, Porcelaines du Lot Virebent has been awarded the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage Company) label.
