Mercuès has made a name for itself through the history of its castle, built, destroyed and rebuilt between the 13th and 18th centuries. The oldest buildings date back to the Middle Ages, and its construction is attributed to the bishops of Cahors. With its defensive assets, the château played a major role in the Wars of Religion. During the Renaissance, it was converted to accommodate the bishops of Cahors. In the 1940s, it was transformed into a hotel residence by its owner at the time, Georges Héreil, a major name in aircraft construction. On his death, it was Georges Vigouroux, a wine merchant, who would shape its destiny.
