Montaigu has managed to preserve its medieval identity, in a green setting, where you can admire pigeon lofts, churches and Romanesque chapels. Montaigu ("monte acuto") developed under Raymond V, the Count of Toulouse, who extended his authority by fortifying the whole region, under threat from the Dukes of Aquitaine. Today, the ramparts are in a fairly good state of preservation, offering an excellent view of the site. Montaigu is the capital of the canton, and has a certain dynamism, the activity having moved, as for its almost neighbour Lauzerte, to the suburbs below the town.
