The capital of Gascony, the city of Auch immediately attracts visitors with its large squares and steep, narrow streets steeped in history. The historic heart of the city, perched on a spur overlooking the Gers and offering beautiful views of the Pyrenees, is full of character. Medieval architecture, represented by beautiful half-timbered houses, blends harmoniously with classical buildings, especially around the imposing Sainte-Marie Cathedral. A masterpiece of the late Gothic period, it offers a successful blend of architectural styles and splendidly recounts the long history of its construction. Gothic structure, Renaissance facade and Baroque choir form a beautiful blend. Not far from the cathedral, don't miss the monumental staircase, which takes you up to the banks of the Gers and gives you a bird's eye view of the whole city. Auch is a city of history, but also of culture, with a focus on the performing arts: it is home to CIRCA, the national circus center, which organizes the Festival du Cirque actuel. The Musée des Amériques is also well worth a visit. Many of the squares, streets and alleyways in the city center are now semi-pedestrian or pedestrianized, such as the commercial Rue Dessoles. These are bustling with markets on weekdays and weekends, and offer a variety of leisurely strolls. You can also follow the river along the Promenade Claude Desbons to the pretty Parc du Couloumé to satisfy your desire for green spaces.
