The site of Chanac was already occupied in Roman times, and the kings of Aragon built a fortified castle here in the 13th century. But it was the bishops of Mende, who had become the center of power, who embellished it in the 16th century and made it their summer residence. This display of wealth annoyed the revolutionaries, who burned the castle to the ground. All that remains today is the square keep. A few elements of the fortifications remain: the Horloge, Pourtalou and Reversat towers. The 13th-century church has a three-bay nave with barrel vaulting. A 17th-century maître-hôtel, saved from the destruction of the château, can also be admired.
