The small village of Septeuil, situated in the valley of the Ru de la Flexanville at its confluence with the Vaucouleurs, is made up of ten hamlets. Its name comes from the Latinsaeptum, meaning "closed". It is renowned for its Gallo-Roman sanctuary, discovered in 1984, and for the former Saint-Corentin-lès-Mantes abbey, founded by Philippe Auguste in 1201 and where his third wife, Agnès de Méranie, was buried. In the 18th century, the building was transformed into a château, with gardens designed by Le Nôtre. Today, the château has been split in two to accommodate a retirement home and a nursing home.
