Inhabited since prehistoric times, Maule was home to a Gallic village and Gallo-Roman burials. In the Middle Ages, the town was owned by the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Sad events included an epidemic of the Black Death and the ravages of the Hundred Years' War. In the 16th century, it became the property of the Harlay de Sancy family, who built a château and one of the finest dovecotes in France. After the French Revolution, the village became a regional agricultural center, and farms were built in addition to working-class residences and those of the lower nobility; there were then six châteaux in the area.
