Located in the center of the département, on the Mantois plateau, Andelu's origins are diverse: Gallic, Celtic or Latin. However, polished axes and Neolithic tools have been found in several parts of the town, attesting to its ancient colonization. Although there are no rivers in the area, two small tributaries of the Seine flow through the eastern part of the commune: the Mauldre and the Ru de Senneville. The chapelle de la Nativité-de-Notre-Seigneur (Nativity of Our Lord chapel) was once part of Andelu's now-defunct château: a former private chapel, it was built in the 17th century and is now privately owned.
