On the edge of the Mantois plateau, Montainville was already inhabited in the Neolithic period, as evidenced by the prehistoric flint tools and pottery found here. Perched on a hill overlooking the Mauldre valley, Montainville is one of the pretty villages in the Yvelines, sought-after for their charm and calm, which have gradually traded in their original agricultural economy for a more residential vocation. Although a few large farms, such as the Fort, still survive here, Montainville owes its fame to the actor Bourvil, who lived here for part of his life and is now buried in the village cemetery.
