Formerly known by the Latin name Magnus, Magny-les-Hameaux lies between the Mérantaise and Rhodon valleys, and comprises 7 hamlets: le Bois des Roches, Buloyer, Romainville, Brouessy, Villeneuve, Gomberville and Cressely. The village's history is closely linked to that of the nuns of the Abbey of Port-Royal-des-Champs, destroyed in 1711 and the origin of a religious and intellectual doctrine, Jansenism, which shook the entire 17th century. Over time, religious, literary, artistic and cultural activity intensified. In 1973, the town became part of the new urban area of Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.
