In the heart of the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse National Regional Park and north of the Rambouillet forest massif, Bazoches-sur-Guyonne takes its name from the Latin Basilica - a public building used in ancient times as a court, trading post or meeting place. A dolmen testifies to the ancient presence of humans in this commune, through which the Guyonne, a tributary of the Mauldre, flows. Bazoches has also been home to a number of celebrities: Jean Monnet and his thatched residence in the hamlet of Houjarray; the architect-designed villa built for Louis Carré; and Brigitte Bardot and her animal shelter.
