Set in a meander of the Seine and surrounded by white chalk cliffs and wooded hillsides, Vétheuil is a charming town with narrow streets, old houses and a washhouse... Claude Monet painted many pictures here. Earlier, however, the village experienced turbulent times, occupied by Vikings before an invasion of Paris in the 9th century, and the scene of a battle between the English and Du Guesclin's armies during the Hundred Years' War. This village of around 900 inhabitants is well worth a visit, not least for the beautiful view from its church with its polychrome roof, a monument painted several times by Claude Monet.
