Located in the Vexin Regional Nature Park, the commune of Saint-Martin-la-Garenne is bordered to the north and south by the Chesnay forest. The site, in a loop of the Seine, was inhabited from prehistoric times (remains discovered in 2021) to Merovingian times. In particular, a Campaniform burial site was found, dated to around 2,200 BC. From the 11th century onwards, the village depended on the Bec-Hellouin abbey, then became a seigneury attached to the lord of La Roche-Guyon, before becoming a commune during the French Revolution. Today, Saint-Martin has fewer than 1,000 inhabitants, divided between the village and the hamlet of Sandrancourt.
