This is a peaceful village, but it bears witness to a sometimes turbulent history. The site was chosen by Julius Caesar as he conquered the region. The strategic spur overlooking the Oise valley was then the starting point for the town's development. The remains of an important 12th-century château, where St. Louis regularly resided, can still be seen. It was the scene of stormy English conquests during the Hundred Years' War. Archaeological excavations carried out at the end of the 20th century revealed the site of the walls, which have now been restored. The commune has a population of 1,500.
