Écouen looks like a quiet little town, with its houses with brown tiled roofs and its charming central square coiled around the church. The site has been occupied since Gallo-Roman times. With a population of 7,200, the town is built on a small hill that marks a landscape where a forest estate extends. The history of the site is closely linked to that of its castle, a magnificent residence built in the 16th century in this setting overlooking the plain of France by the de Montmorency family. Every year in May, the city remembers this prestigious past during the Constable's festival celebrating the Renaissance.
