Renowned for its ancient abbey, whose name means "the great forest", La Sauve is also well worth a visit for its Saint-Pierre parish church, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. This 13th-century Gothic church is surrounded by a cemetery offering a beautiful view of the abbey. Inside, the stoup, made of two superimposed capitals (12th-13th centuries), and the recumbent of an archbishop, placed above a carved stone frieze, are surmounted by a cistern containing relics said to be those of Saint Gérard, founder of the Abbey.
