Terre des Graves on the edge of the Gironde forest, La Brède is located 18 kilometres south of Bordeaux. The cradle and homeland of Montesquieu, La Brède fed the thoughts of the philosopher who made his fame and of whom he has been, since then, the most faithful ambassador. Charles de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu, Baron de La Brède and other dependencies, was indeed a philosopher of the Enlightenment, born on 18 January 1689 at the Château de La Brède. With the castle of course, the church of Saint-Jean-d'Étampes is one of the remarkable sites to see in the town. In the cemetery of the church of the village, considerably reworked in the nineteenth century, we can see several tombstones, including that of Montesquieu's grandfather or Jean de Secondat. The inhabitants of La Brède are the Brédois and the Brédoises.
