Founded in 1315 by Amaury III de Craon, seneschal to the King of England, Créon soon saw its fairs and markets flourish, becoming a veritable country town and a major economic hub on the outskirts of Bordeaux. The central Place de la Prévôté, with its arcades, is typical of bastide towns. Dating from different periods (18th-19th centuries), the facades, some of which feature sculptural elements, are well worth a look. The church, with its 13th-century Madonna and Child and massive bell tower, is also worth a visit. Créon was the first town in France to become a "Point Relais Vélo", and benefits from an extensive network of cycle paths.
