An ancient Roman axis for some, a Genoese pivot for others, Cardo is nonetheless a typically Corsican village, built high up on a rocky buttress. The village really took off in the 15th century, and it was from its navy, Porto Cardo, that Bastia was born. Cardo became a Bastia district by order of King Louis-Philippe in 1844. Today, it's one of the city's finest residential districts. Here you'll find the beautiful San Stefano church, built in 1835, with its 1887 Gothic organ loft by Giuseppe Paoli and his son, two 17th-century polychrome wooden statues and 18th-century paintings.
