Town founded in the 11th century. Arnaud Daniel, a great Perigordian troubadour of the Middle Ages, was born in the castle; his poetic work in the langue d'oc reveals the feelings in courtly love and also serves to veil the political and social realities of feudalism. The splendid old castles are the witness of this luxuriant time. This county town on the banks of the Dronne is still a trading town (1st weekly market in the department). Its economy is essentially based on agriculture (cereals, walnuts, tobacco, poultry, calves), but cultural tourism and sports activities are undoubtedly booming.
