Around 727, Abd-ar-Rhaman, an Arab emir in the countryside, is said to have stopped on this promontory overlooking the Tude valley. During his stay, the city would have kept the name of "Mont des Maures". A 15th century castle, at the foot of which the "high quarter" winds, crowns the site. This castle belonged to the Marquis de Rochechouart and only its remarkable 11th century chapel is open to visitors. The church of Saint-Denys, on the road to Santiago de Compostela, has a beautiful façade decorated with a polylobate Romanesque portal.
