The village of Zaachila, 15 kilometres from Oaxaca, is home to a small archaeological area, one of the main pieces of the important role played by this city-state in the decay phase of the Zapotec civilization (corresponding to the abandonment of Monte Albán). Built around 1200 and still active at the arrival of the Spanish, it is generally considered that Zaachila was the last capital of the zapotec empire: it was then governed by a marriage alliance with the mixtèque civilization, which then dominated the region.
