Located on Cerro El Bonete, Atzompa is an ancient satellite city of Monte Albán, barely 4 kilometres away. It was mainly used by the dignitaries of the latter between 200 and 900 AD. Atzompa has no less than three ball games, one of which is of monumental proportions, as well as various residential buildings, including the Casa de Oriente and the Palacio de los Altares, in which a ceramic kiln has been discovered, an activity for which the village of Santa María Atzompa is still renowned today. From the site, the Monte Albán complex can be seen and the view of the Etla Valley is magnificent.
