20 km from Oaxaca, it is an isolated Mixtec village in a Zapotec region. The place is known for its Dominican monastery, whose construction started in 1559 but was never completed. Vicente Guerrero, hero of the revolution and liberal governor of Oaxaca, was imprisoned there. Overthrown by a conservative plot fomented by the Church, Guerrero fled to Acapulco, where a ship's captain delivered him to the plotters. He was imprisoned in the monastery for two days before being shot on February 14, 1831. A monument, built on the spot where he fell, can be seen from his cell, which has since become a national monument.
