The site was occupied as early as the 2nd century A.D., but its phase of growth and expansion came later, from the middle of the 8th century; the city remained a centre of reference until the Spanish Conquest. At 46 km from Oaxaca, Mitla is today a large and unattractive town where textile and mezcal shops abound, along the two kilometers that can be walked to reach the ruins. The ruins are scattered in five groups throughout the city. Only one of the groups is open to the public (El Grupo de las Columnas), while the other, located next door, is occupied by the main church and its patio.
